Boys and girls tennis beat CCA, improve to 12-0

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) boys and girls tennis teams stayed unbeaten after impressive 5-0 Cape & Islands League victories over the Cape Cod Academy (CCA) Seahawks on May 9.

The boys made brisk work of CCA on the Ned Fennessy home courts in Oak Bluffs. The Vineyarders clinched the match in less than 40 minutes. First singles Chris Ferry defeated Sam Shanahan, 6-0, 6-1, Max Potter beat Dylan Kostovick, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles, Eric Reubens shut out A.J. Lusty at third singles, 6-0, 6-0, and first doubles duo Owen Favreau and Spencer Pogue added another double bagel with a win over Anthony Morning and Eli Sorenti-Burns.

The match of the day played out in second doubles, with Vineyarders David Krauthamer and Ben Belisle outlasting T.J. Yeomans and Richard Leedham, 6-7, 6-3, and 10-6 in the tiebreaker.

The MVRHS girls swept the Seahawks in Osterville, dropping just two games in the five matches. First singles Kelly Klaren and third singles Hannah Rabasca were 6-0, 6-0, winners over Marena Gardella and Tania Weiland, respectively, while second doubles Alex Rego and Tessa Hammond defeated Abbie Catalano and Yoana Doklova by the same score. Second singles Victoria Scott downed Lili Shanahan 6-1, 6-0, with first doubles Molly Pogue and Chesca Potter matching that margin of victory over Daisy Dai and Kelly Wyeth.

Members of the boys and girls teams also played in the South sectional of the State Individual Tournament on Saturday. No. 2 seed Chris Ferry and unseeded Eric Reubens booked their spots in the round of 16 with dominating wins at Cape Cod Academy, while top-seeded Kelly Klaren rolled to a pair of 6-0, 6-0, wins at Old Rochester in Mattapoisett.
