On Wednesday, August 7, at 7:30 pm, Mark Alan Lovewell will lead an evening of sea songs, maritime stories, poetry, and storytelling at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, according to a press release.

The presentation, “Back on Martha’s Vineyard: With the Fishes,” will feature multiple special guests, and is wrapped around the release of a CD by Lovewell called “With the Fishes.”

Guests will include maritime historian Matthew Stackpole, mystery writer Cynthia Riggs, outdoor fishing author Janet Messineo, and folksingers Tristan Israel and Sara Piazza.

The evening concert is $20 for admission for adults, $5 for seniors, and $5 for young children.

“Back on Martha’s Vineyard” is a program that celebrates the ways of the Island, and what makes it so special.

Part of Lovewell’s presentation is an old whaling song that has not yet been heard in this century. Most likely written before the Civil War, the song reports on Edgartown and its whalers and their perspective of what they do.

Also included in the presentation are locally relevant seafaring songs, such as the story of how the topsail schooner Shenandoah got her name. The songs also promote ocean conservation.
