Heavy meddling

To the Editor:

I can’t help wondering just what the Democrats are trying to cover up by insisting on hiding behind the smokescreen of the allegation that Russia is the only foreign power meddling in the U.S. electoral process. They really shot themselves in the foot with this!

It happens to be the truth that everybody is meddling in everybody else’s electoral process.

The U.S., as the most powerful economy in today’s world and the one able to slap sanctions at whim on whomever it chooses, is naturally of vital interest to the rest of the world.

In its own interest, it has also taken an active hand in the political process of other countries from the start. That is, after all, what diplomatic missions have always been there for: Their job is to gather information about their host country to provide a better understanding of that country to the sovereign who sends them and, on the other hand, to influence the powers that be of the host country in the interest of their home country.

One may also wonder whether Boris Johnson, by his irrational policies and actions, is actually pursuing the interests of the land of his birth: by alienating what used to be Great Britain from Europe, he is delivering Britain to the tender mercies of Uncle Sam, on whose goodwill Britain will depend for keeping its economy afloat.

  1. Boris Johnson got elected as PM because the people voted democratically to leave the EU and Theresa May couldnt get it done or wouldnt get it done. As for meddling in elections, yes the US meddles in many other countries elections for all kinds of reasons but the DEMS ignore that.

  2. “Everybody’s meddling” is a reason to not take action against our biggest adversary and the greatest threat to democracies around the globe? This is just nonsensical. And please elaborate on “covering up”? Every national security apparatus as well as the extensive evidence presented in the Mueller Report that resulted in indictments, confirms that Russia operated an extensive, illegal campaign to alter the results of a US election. What are YOU hiding?

  3. tennis star36. Years ago there were soviet bugs in our embassies. 50 years ago. Meddling has gone on for ever and will continue. The latest round occurred during Obama’s watch but Trump gets the blame. Obama sent our taxpayer money to oust Netanyahu in Israel in 2016. Is that meddling? It wasnt long ago that Dems believed Russia was not an adversary at all. Remember them piling on Romney? Do we interfere in Russian elections? Yes. By the way the indictments were all on Russians who will never be found and never extradited. The other indictments of Manafort and the like were non Russia related. The election was not altered. Hilary was a bad candidate. In fact she altered the election by paying for Fusion GPS opposition research which was fraudulent. OK Ok it doesnt matter.

  4. “to gather information about their host country to provide a better understanding of that country to the sovereign who sends them and, on the other hand, to influence the powers that be of the host country in the interest of their home country.” Brigitte, is this what you perceive a diplomatic mission to be? Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of states. It usually refers to the conduct of international relations through the intercession of professional diplomats with regard to a full range of topical issues, the conduct of foreign governments and officials through dialogue, negotiation, and other nonviolent means.” (“diplomacy | Nature, Purpose, History, & Practice”. Encyclopedia Britannica. Retrieved 30 July 2019.) Your equivocation argument, that “everybody does it” is only apologetics for Comrade Trump and President Putin.
