Aquinnah special town meeting short of quorum

The Aquinnah special town meeting failed to reach a quorum Tuesday night, as 27 voters showed up, and 37 were needed to do the town’s business.

Originally scheduled for Oct. 8, the meeting was postponed in observance of the start of Yom Kippur, and Cranberry Day, a holiday celebrated by the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).

One central warrant article that was to be discussed at the special town meeting was a vote to transfer $125,000 from the town’s stabilization fund to be added to the FY 2020 legal budget, mainly to cover expenses related to litigation with the tribe over a proposed casino.

Another article dealt with transferring $8,990 from the stabilization fund to pay for the town’s share of upgrades to the Dukes County Regional Emergency Communication Center and Radio System.

No date has been set for a rescheduled meeting.
