Oak Bluffs photographer Michael Blanchard will donate a share of profits from his awardwinning book “Through A Sober Lens: A Photographer’s Journey” to MusiCares, a charitable organization that provides those in the music industry a support system of health and human services across a spectrum of needs, including physical and mental health, addiction recovery, hearing clinics, unforeseen personal emergencies, and disaster relief, including COVID-19 relief, according to information from the photographer and the book’s publisher Genevieve Press.

Blanchard has donated more than $40,000 through sales of photographs, calendars, and books to support mental health and substance abuse treatment. His 2014 debut, “Fighting for My Life,” was recently rereleased in a paperback version to satisfy requests from incarcerated readers, according to information from the author.

Genevieve Press owner Julian Wise has a connection with MusiCares grounded in an earlier affiliation with Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation. Wise was editor of a book about Metallica and learned about their charitable foundation then.

“When the book came out, I donated my share of royalties to the foundation, so they receive a modest check two times a year on my behalf,” Wise explains. “Through this affiliation I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the people at the foundation and appeared on Sirius XM Radio’s VOLUME channel two years in a row, along with foundation director Rene Richardson, to raise awareness during their National Day of Giving in May. Last year AWMH donated $50,000 to support MusiCares.”

Wise says he’s always been interested in the role art and music can play during difficult times.

“I’ve always been interested in the ways art and music can become sources of tangible help during tough times, and there seemed to be a natural affinity between Michael’s uplifting message and MusiCares’ mission,” he says.
