Do you realize how fortunate we are in Tisbury? I had to call 911 for an ambulance on Sunday evening. Soon afterwards two of Tisbury's finest, policemen who are also EMTs, arrived to make sure everything was under control. They stayed with us until the ambulance arrived, providing both comfort and reassurance. There is no way to express my appreciation for all of them.
Summer's flowers became faded and have been replaced all along Main Street by brighter, newer displays. The Beach House is brilliant with colorful plants in window boxes reflecting the bright colors of the pottery inside.
Speaking of colors, the Louisa Gould Gallery is celebrating "Island Colors," whether the sea in its many hues and tones, both vibrant and soft, or the interior landscape. The show runs through next Wednesday. This is new work of Martha's Vineyard artists, from turquoise and coral island colored beads of GoGo's signature silver and gold earrings and necklaces to whimsical acrylics by Sandra Indig. I love Lanny McDowell's peaceful baby blue and lime green paintings where the distant horizon is evolving into the sea. Marston Clough has a handful of small oils in greens and blues along with monoprints in similar colors. Trager di Pietro shows several new acrylic Clamdiggers juxtaposed with the vibrant green and red of the shirts. Tamar Russell's "Foggy Barren" is the centerpiece. Her loose use of color simulates the fog rolling over the hills and captures the muted colors caused by diminishing light.
Register now for the 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 10 to benefit the Vineyard Haven Library. The entry forms are at the Library. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome. The fee is $15, with free T-shirts to the first 100 registrants. The race will go from the library to the West Chop lighthouse and back.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Jessica Dolliver. Saturday is the perfect day for a birthday party, and Edwin Gould will be celebrating. Have a happy one, Edwin. Sunday is a special day for Marguerite Clark and Island artist Maggie Masek. Wish the best to Melissa Gold on Tuesday. Best birthday wishes go to Doris Young on Wednesday.
Congratulations to Mike McLaughlin and Sue Mitchell, who mark eight years of wedded bliss on Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: "You can tell from the colorful backpacks that school is open. Watch for little ones too excited to look both ways."
