We're embarked on another Bass and Bluefish Derby, the 62nd. The sportfishing community is out in force, pitting its wits against the denizens of the deep, who are so good at making themselves scarce. Fishermen are therefore complaining about the absence of suitable trophy fishes - an annual August/September rite. Good luck to all of you.
For the rest of the world, the beaches still beckon during these summery September days, but we're edging into the more structured off-season routines. It's the time for poets and artists to get to work, and Nancy Aronie is ready for all writers who want to put their thoughts and ideas and feelings into words, something her Writing From the Heart workshops are well known for accomplishing with aplomb. Her September workshop will meet Monday through Thursday from 9 am until noon, starting this Monday, Sept. 17. Please call Nancy at 508-645-9085 to register.
Local merchants participated in the library's summer reading program for children donating, as they always do, goodies from their establishments to those who successfully finished their reading assignments. Chilmark Chocolates donated a chocolate lollipop; the Chilmark store, a slice of pizza; Menemsha Texaco, a Popsicle, The Galley a small ice cream cone, The Bite, small order of fries, and the Menemsha Market donated a candy stick.
Photographs by Alan Brigish go on display at the library starting next week. Mr. Brigish is a noted photographer of African wildlife, as well as of tamer subjects, like Islanders at work and at play.
Julie Kimball's Westmeadow Press is seeking submissions for a book of poems, "Poems for Vineyard Kids," to be published next summer. Full- or part-time residents may submit up to five poems. The audience is children ages 4 to 12. Poems may be rhyming or free verse and should reflect Vineyard life. For more information, visit westmeadowpress.net or e-mail email@example.com.
The Friends of the Chilmark Library are sponsoring two events next week. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 pm Chris Wiley of Vineyard Gardens will give a workshop on container gardening.
On Thursday, Sept. 20, at 5 pm Cathy Walthers, a chef and cookbook author, will give a cooking demonstration with recipes from her recent book "Raising the Salad Bar." Both events are free, and everyone is welcome.
