William Marks of Edgartown was recently elected as Water Advisor to the board of the Women's International Coalition Organization (WICO). WICO is based in Britain.
Donna Lowell-Bettencourt and Moira Silva of the Edgartown School attended the five-day National Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference in New York City this November. Ms. Lowell-Bettencourt is the school librarian, and Ms. Silva is a 7th- and 8th- grade language arts teacher.
The M.V. Public Charter School introduced a new recycling program this fall. The school's first step in their "Go Green" initiative, they have expanded the existing recycling system, with labeled bags for each different recyclable material in every classroom.
Robert Pearlman of Oak Bluffs has been included in the pages of "Adventurous Dreams, Adventurous Lives," a collection of the youthful dreams of 120 men and women who became acclaimed explorers as adults. Mr. Pearlman has participated in four major expeditions to Africa. In 2004, he organized the Maasai Oral Histories Project in Kenya, now known as the Maasai Cultural Conservation Project. In 2003 he was awarded the Sweeney Medal for a lifetime of experience and service to the Explorer Club.
Chase Seller of West Tisbury has successfully completed all requirements and has received his private pilot's license. He is a sophomore at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater. He is the son of James and Shuva Seller.
Tonya Leonard of West Tisbury was recently inducted into the Skidmore Academic Honor Society at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Tonya is majoring in elementary education and law. She is the daughter of Richard and Pia Leonard.
Virginia Yorke of Aquinnah was officially appointed Justice of the Peace for the town of Aquinnah on Oct. 14. She was sworn in at the State House on Nov. 7. This position was previously held by Jeananne Jeffers, who died this past July.
Matthew E. Scott of Aquinnah has enrolled in Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. as a member of the class of 2011. Matthew is the son of Francis and Linda Scott.
Olivia Cimeno has made the honor roll at the Tisbury School. Olivia is in the eighth grade.
