Veteran singer-songwriter and teacher Livingston Taylor is in concert at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown this Thursday evening at 7:30 pm. He will be joined by young singing sensation Jessica Ashley.
Mr. Taylor’s friendly, folksy show has been polished by a career spanning more than 40 years. He is brother to Kate, James, Hugh, and the late Alex, all with solid Vineyard musical credentials. He recorded his first record at age 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective, and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide.
He has had top 40 hits, including “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running.” “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman” were both recorded by his brother James. Livingston has been an Island favorite for decades. He is equally at home with a range of musical genres — from folk, and pop, to gospel and jazz. His upbeat storytelling is always an entertaining part of his performance.
The opening act is a show-stopper in her own right. Jessica Ashley, a fast rising star who performed at the Old Whaling Church last summer to great acclaim, is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter from New York City whose career has skyrocketed, according to a press release. Ms. Ashley recently signed a record deal with Evan Bogart’s M2V Records, who was named by Billboard Magazine as one of their 2013 “40 Under 40” artists. Jessica and Bogart, who wrote such hits as Beyonce’s “Halo” and Rihanna’s “SOS,” have been working on Ms. Ashley’s debut album in Los Angeles with other prominent producers and songwriters.
Her EP “Prelude,” released shortly before her scheduled debut Vineyard appearance, quickly became a fan favorite, creating quite an online buzz and spurring three popular music videos.
