A plane reportedly crashed while trying to take off from Katama Airfield in Edgartown on Tuesday afternoon; public safety officials say that no one was seriously injured.
According to an initial assessment by the Federal Aviation Administration, a Cessna 182 plane with two people aboard lost control and crashed into nearby brush while trying to take off from the airfield around 3:15 pm. Rick Breitenfeldt, an FAA spokesperson, told The Times that the agency is investigating the matter.
The case is also being investigated by Massachusetts State Police. A representative from the State Police was not immediately available for comment.
Mary Detloff, spokesperson for the Trustees of Reservations, said the plane crashed into Katama Farm property, which borders the nonprofit organization’s FARM Institute.
“The crash occurred later in the afternoon after our day camp children had been picked up for the day, so they did not witness the crash,” Detloff said. “There was no damage to our property.”
The FAA registry shows the 1975 Cessna 182 is owned by 43rd Aviation Flying Club, a nonprofit aviation club based in Wethersfield, Conn. A representative of the club was not immediately available.
Edgartown Police Lt. Michael Snowden said that there were minor injuries from the crash but no one was transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He referred questions to the State Police.
Edgartown Police, Fire, and EMS personnel responded to the minor crash.
A representative of Katama Airfield was not immediately available.
