Phase 2 of the Aquinnah Town Playground will begin on Oct. 19. This final phase of construction will add a new play area designed for children ages 2 to 5, and will complete the installation of the plan that was collaboratively planned with town children in 2020, as part of the Aquinnah town center planning process.
To prepare for construction, the playground will be closed beginning Oct. 1, and will remain closed through early November. The parks and recreation committee will begin working to renovate the town basketball court this fall, with demo/reconstruction of the court surface to happen in late September. Currently, the Aquinnah parks and recreation committee needs to raise an additional $60,000 to complete this much-needed community project.
A generous local family has offered to match donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000. If the $25,000 is raised by Oct. 1, they will donate the last $10,000 to the fall installation.
Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Checks can be made payable to the town of Aquinnah, with “basketball court” written in the memo line, and sent to or dropped off at the town hall, 955 State Road, Aquinnah MA 02535.
The Aquinnah parks and recreation committee thanks the community for its support as they continue to create welcoming community recreation spaces that can help bring people together and give Aquinnah children safe and fun play spaces to enjoy for many years to come.
