Stephen L. Doyle of Edgartown, a local ship’s captain and owner of a prominent Island home-building company, died peacefully on Saturday, May 2, after a lengthy and valiant battle against heart disease. He was 59.

Stephen had an early fondness for the fishing off Martha’s Vineyard, and as a young man he spent many summers in the waters off her coast. Stephen moved from North Conway, N.H., to Martha’s Vineyard about 25 years ago. He spent most of those years in Edgartown, and he always said, “I am blessed to be living in a place that is as beautiful as any postcard.”

After he earned his captain’s license and bought a boat, Stephen plied the local waters with family and friends, and had many tall tales to tell at the end of the day.

A builder, Stephen built MV Coastal into an award-winning business that served the needs of people throughout Martha’s Vineyard. Stephen led a full, if too short, life. Ever the true craftsman, his legacy endures in the people who loved him and the many beautiful houses he built for others to enjoy.

Stephen is survived by his three sisters, Rona, Lori, and Deanna; two sons, Jason and Justin; nieces Kelly and Breanna; and nephews Stephen and Christopher; and many other dear family and friends. He will be sorely missed come fishing season.

There will be a celebration of Steve’s life at The Wharf, his favorite restaurant, in Edgartown, on Sunday, May 17, at noon.
