In an unusual single-car accident just before 10 am Wednesday, Arthur Spengler, 79, of West Tisbury was driving southbound on State Road by the Polly Hill Arboretum when he veered off the road in his 2012 Honda CR-V, drove up the ramp of a Vineyard Garden’s landscape trailer parked on the side of the road, and flipped his car. Mr. Spengler, the only occupant, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
“It looks like his passenger-side tires went up on the ramp, and eventually the car flipped and landed on the driver’s side,” West Tisbury Police Lieut. Matt Mincone said in a phone call.
When police arrived at the scene, Mr. Spengler was sitting on the driver’s-side window, looking through the windshield. The fire department and EMS did a
rapid extrication because there was gas leaking from the car.
“For the damage to the car, he was actually in pretty good shape,” Lieutenant Mincone said.
There was damage to the Vineyard Garden’s trailer and truck. The Honda CR-V was totaled. Witnesses coming from both directions said Mr. Spengler swerved off the road with no obvious cause. Police are still investigating a possible cause, and have not filed charges at this time.
