To the Editor:
At Tisbury town meeting on April 12, residents voted to adopt the bylaw that would ban plastic checkout bags, effective Jan. 1, 2017.
In my opinion, this should not cause undue hardship on merchants. Some shopkeepers seemed uncertain as to how to proceed without plastic bags. I have every confidence in the ability of the Vineyard Conservation Society to continue their initiative by reaching out to store owners with viable alternatives. This might include signage, education, suggesting green suppliers — perhaps ideas for selling canvas bags with the shop name for a nominal cost. Residents may have additional solutions.
Thank you, VCS, for your time and attention on this environmental nuisance. Let’s help ease the way for our merchants in making this a reality on Martha’s Vineyard.
