A car crash at the intersection of State Road and Edgartown Road, which approaches town by Edgartown Vineyard Haven Road, caused one vehicle to veer into a telephone pole, knocking out power to homes and businesses in multiple locations throughout the area.
According to the Eversource’s outage map, the power was knocked out in the areas surrounding where Skiff Avenue and Dunham Avenue converge, behind the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and on Beach Road. The outage lasted from 9:40 am until around 11:15 am, affecting a total of 763 customers.
Some businesses and homes, including the Martha’s Vineyard Times building, had power restored by 10:25 am.
According to the Tisbury Police, a grey sedan stopped at the bottom of Edgartown Road to take a left onto State Road but went too early and collided with the rear passenger side of a black Mercedes as it passed by heading toward Main Street in downtown Vineyard Haven. The impact was light at the back end of the vehicle’s right side, but it caused the vehicle to veer off the road to the right and strike a telephone pole.
Tisbury Police Sgt. Max Sherman said there were no serious injuries, but both drivers were transported to the hospital. The driver of the sedan was under 18 years old, so without a guardian, they are required by law to be transported to the hospital. Both cars were towed by JWL Transport Inc.
Sherman said the driver of the sedan will also be receiving a citation for failing to yield.
The response to the incident included Tisbury Fire, Police, and EMS officials. A portion of State Road heading toward Main Street surrounding the accident was shut down, and traffic was redirected for roughly an hour and half.
“The crash itself wasn’t too bad. It was where the car ended up that made it so precarious,” Sherman said.
