Martha’s Vineyard Hospital confirmed that Dr. Tim Tsai, director of emergency medical services, has been placed on leave from his job. Hospital officials, citing privacy and work rule concerns, would not comment on the circumstances.

“Dr. Tsai is on leave from his positions as director of the department of emergency services, EMS (emergency medical services) director and ER (emergency room) physician at the hospital,” Tim Walsh, hospital chief executive officer, said in a prepared statement.

Mr. Walsh confirmed that Dr. Jeffrey Zack, a member of the hospital emergency room staff, had accepted the position of interim director of emergency medical services.

Dr. Tsai did not return a message left on his cell phone.

In 2004, the hospital Dr. Tsai was appointed director of the hospital Emergency Services Department. He took over the from Dr. Alan Hirshberg in July of that year.

Dr. Tsai was, at the time of his appointment, no stranger to the emergency room. He had worked there since arriving on the Island in June 2001.
