First, undo the harm you’ve done

To the Editor:

To whoever robbed Heather Gardens, thievery is one of the lowest forms of self-expression. Times are financially tough for all of us, but that doesn’t give anyone license to steal from others, least of all the good, hardworking, and gentle owners of Heather Gardens.

The violation of their place and of their peace of mind can never be undone, but you can begin to make amends by returning their money and by doing no more harm.

People who heard of this theft have all said, “Oh no, not on the Vineyard.” Living on an Island makes us more dependent on each other in many ways. Honor and integrity top the list. This is still a supportive community, where there’s no room for anything less.
