Hippopotamus in Chilmark

Joan Merry and husband Don Lyons returned from their annual trip to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe — Joan says, “It’s the place I love most other than the Island” — with an extraordinary variety of art. Inside and out, Gossamer Gallery, now in its second year on State Road in Chilmark, has a new display of small and large sculptures, including totems, interpretative abstractions, animals, and vessels. Everything is fashioned from single pieces of stone — such as verdite, serpentine, and opal stone, and springstone.

The gallery is also showing new work of Island artists Bill O’Callaghan’s whimsical outdoor clay, planters, and bird houses, David Smith’s unique wood-turned vessels, Ann Howes’s watercolors, Paul Brissette’s mixed media constructions, and David Geiger’s sculptures. Daily, 11 am to 5 pm. Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm. 508-645-7978.
