Immigrants must pass a U.S. civics quiz. Test your knowledge.

On July Fourth, the nation celebrates its birthday. As the accompanying feature story about a newly minted citizen shows, the United States continues to be a beacon of freedom in the eyes of many people around the world.

The process for becoming a U.S. citizen includes an oral civics quiz. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCCIS) provides applicants with 100 possible questions. A USCIS officer asks each applicant 10. The applicant must answer six questions correctly to pass.

Test your civics skills in this quiz, but we’ve raised the bar. You need to answer the following 10 questions and submit your answers online or by mail to be included in a random drawing of entries. Only those with all 10 correct answers will be entered in the drawing.

The winner will receive a dinner for two* at the beautiful Lure Grill in Katama, overlooking South Beach and featuring wood fired menu items, many harvested on Martha’s Vineyard ( The prize includes the opportunity to travel by sunset water taxi from Edgartown Harbor to Katama, with return by shuttle van.

[*Alcohol and gratuities not included. This offer is subject to space availability at the time of booking and is valid for any night the restaurant is open in 2010. May not be redeemed for cash.]
