Island-grown music: a family affair

When Jemima James hosts her second annual Variety Show at Featherstone Center for the Arts’ Musical Monday this Monday, July 5, she’ll be transforming a long family tradition into an event for the entire community.

“The variety show grew from my living room, where my sons brought their talented friends to play music,” says Ms. James. Her sons are now grown and gone from the living room. One of them, Willy Mason, is pursuing a successful musical career that currently has him touring Europe with Norah Jones.

But that younger generation of Island-based singer/songwriters, along with some more established ones, is still around and singing up a storm. Sharing the stage with Ms. James will be a roster of local talent including Nina Violet and Marciana Jones; Lexie Roth; Lilah Larson and Sons of an Illustrious Father; Tauras Biskus and members of Ballywho; and West Tisbury poet/singer Dan Waters.

The show will be held outdoors under the trees. Audience members are invited to bring chairs, blankets, and a picnic.
