The Plein Truth

Award-winning Connecticut artist Gray Park, a regular presence on the Vineyard, has joined the Martha’s Vineyard Workshops and Louisa Gould Gallery program. He is teaching plein air painting, the first workshop of their season. The session will accommodate all levels of skills and experience, from beginning to advanced. Participants may work in any medium they prefer.

Mr. Gray spends his summers painting on the Vineyard to prepare for his August show at the Louisa Gould Gallery, 54 Main Street, in Vineyard Haven. His paintings have been exhibited at the gallery since its opening in 2003.

The five-hour plein air painting class takes place Monday July 12th from 9 am to 2 pm at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs. Cost, $125. Register at 508 693.7373, or go to for further details.

The Art of Relationships

After being befriended by Betty Burton and the Burton-Sudman family on their trip to Haiti in 2003, native artist Wilfrid Dantis and his 11-member family in Port-Au-Prince were devastated by the earthquake that left thousands homeless. Several Vineyard families came to his aid, making it possible for him to rent a home and afford water and food.

Mr. Dantis has come the Island this summer both to meet and thank those who supported him, and to earn money for his family through the sale of his art — vibrant paintings of his homeland.

His show, “Images of Haiti” opens Friday, July 9, 1 to 8 at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. There will be artist’s receptions Friday from 4 to 7 pm, and Saturday, July 10 from 11 am to 1 pm. 508-696-4211.
