Monday, at Manters Memorial Field in West Tisbury, the Highlanders and Stampede faced off, each with a 6-win, 2-loss record. After seven innings of softball slugging the Highlanders had advanced to 7&2 and the Stampede had slipped to 6&3.
The Stampede jumped off to a 5-1 lead in the first, thanks in large part to the team’s long-ball attack including a triple and a home run.The Stampede grew their lead in the second inning to 7-2.
Neither team scored in the third
The Highlanders exploded for 10 runs in the fourth, including two round-trippers. The Stampede responded with four of their own and the score stood 12-11 after four.
As it turned out, the fifth inning made the difference as the Highlanders added four, then held the Stampede scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
The last two innings were a wash as teams matched each other with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The final count, 19-14, favored the Highlanders
At Veterans Park, Tisbury, the Landsharks beat the Catboat Killers in the first game of the Monday double header, a meeting of two teams hungry for wins.
The second game of the double-header was a win by the Brewhas over the Treds. The Brewhas won the game but lost their shortstop and captain, John VanPutten, who suffered a painful tear of an Achilles tendon while fielding a hot bouncer to short.
The Hurricanes, Highlanders and Brewhas lead the league with the most wins — seven. The ‘Canes have lost one game. Both the Brewhas and Highlanders have been beaten twice.
