Funny you don’t look 20

Next Saturday, August 7, all are invited to stop in, meet the artists, mingle and enjoy refreshments from 5 to 7 pm. And All That Jazz

This Saturday, artist Robert Freeman brings his striking, life-size figures in oil on canvas to Cousen Rose Gallery on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. His “Black Tie” series of paintings of cosmopolitan African Americans in evening dress express movement and flow, an inspiration the Boston-based Mr. Freeman compares to jazz.

“Jazz has always been part of the African-American experience,” he was quoted saying. “Jazz plays a role in my paintings simply in movement of the figures.”

He says it is what he says he sees all around him when he watches people dancing, standing, moving, walking and talking.

His work is in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Public Library, Boston College, Brown University, and the New York Schomburg Center.

The Fabulous Four

On Friday, July 30 from 6 to 8 pm, Shaw Cramer in Vineyard Haven will hold a reception for four artists whose work demonstrates the impressive calliber of art on the Island. In the gallery’s third “Double Feature” exhibit, the art work of Leslie Baker, Eric Jensen, Elizabeth Lockhart Taft, and Eileen Braun will be featured. The show runs through August 13.

West Tisbury artist Leslie Baker shows her broad range of talent with a collection of still life oil paintings call “Shades of Gray.” Each painting directs attention to the subtle gradations of colors of objects and shadows.

Eric Jensen has been showing his handbuilt porcelain at the Shaw Cramer Gallery since it opened in 1995. His focus is primarily dinnerware, vases, and other functional pieces that show originality and elegance.

Plein air painter and Island resident, Elizabeth Lockhart Taft continues to interpret the light, color, and forms of Island landscapes, working in oil on linen or panel. She works outdoors and watches for the desired colors to emerge before beginning to paint.

Eileen Braun is one of the gallery’s newest artists. Shrimp Splash Vessels with pods combine with textural White Work and Galaxy Vessels. She works in porcelain creating biomorphic sculptural forms inspired by the sea, land and sky.
