Barbara L. (Bourne) Cotterill, 82, of West Tisbury formerly of Mansfield and West Bridgewater died on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010 at the Life Care Center in West Bridgewater. She was the beloved wife of the late John T. Cotterill Jr. who died on April 21, 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Cotterill were wed on September 16, 1951.
Born in Weymouth on June 28, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Harold W. and Hazel G. (Goodell) Bourne. Barbara grew up and was educated in West Bridgewater schools and was a graduate of West Bridgewater High School. A dedicated homemaker to her loving family, she had lived in West Tisbury for the past 35 years and was a former 23-year resident of Mansfield and 24-year resident of West Bridgewater.An active participant of the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair for many years, Ms. Cotterill also enjoyed working in the summertime at the West Tisbury beaches.
Barbara was an avid photographer who also loved visiting and “collecting” lighthouses. She was a former member of the both the United Methodist Church in Mansfield and also the Cochesett United Methodist Church in West Bridgewater.
She is survived by her devoted children, Lorraine E. Renker and her husband, Richard, of New York, Lynne E. Plante and her husband, Wilfred, of Mansfield, Joanne M. Toole and her husband, Patrick, of Wareham, Julie L. Cotterill of Attleboro and John T. Cotterill III of West Tisbury. The sister of Mary Lou Vargas of West Bridgewater, Carol Bourne of Arizona, and the late Clyfton Bourne, Richard Bourne, and Minetta Price, Ms. Cotterill is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Mark Renker, Eric Toole, Jennifer Renker, Ryan Toole, Amy Cotterill, Shana Plante, Josh Cotterill, and Katherine Toole, her great-granddaughter Julianna Toth, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday Aug. 7, at 11 am at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield. Burial will be at a later date in the Spring Brook Cemetery, in Mansfield.Visitation will be held on Saturday morning prior to the services beginning at 9 am at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
