No help from the vets

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter out of sadness as well as anger. My pet bunny died today His name was Max and he was eight months old.

What angers me is that I, as well as my two children ages 12 and 7, had to watch our pet bunny suffer because there wasn’t a vet clinic on this Island that would show any compassion. I am curious if vets take the same oath that doctors do and, if so, I wonder when it becomes all about the money and not about the animal?

I understand that everyone has to make a living, however don’t people become veterinarians because they have a love for animals? Or is it for the money?

I called many Island vet clinics today and they all wanted an outrageous amount of money to treat this pet rabbit. I’m talking $350 to $500 is the amount I was told for an office visit and blood work and x-rays.

When I asked about the option of having to put the bunny down, I was given a price of $140 to euthanize a two-pound animal? Are you kidding me?

So, because I am the single mother of two kids and not currently working, I couldn’t afford this amount to be paid upfront. However, they wouldn’t humanly euthanize my animal without the payment of $140, plus another fee to be determined when they saw the rabbit.

So I am very sad to say that not only did my family lose a wonderful pet that we hand-raised since he was 4.5 weeks old, but he suffered up until he took his very last breath.

You vets should be ashamed of yourselves. You mean to tell me that you couldn’t take two minutes out of your day to humanely euthanize a pet rabbit because of my inability to pay almost $200. Very sad.

One thing I do want to say is I did speak to a woman at My Pet’s Vet, I believe her name was Jackie. She was very sweet and very helpful, so I do thank her for the help she tried to give me.

So, I hope you think twice when you answer a phone call from a desperate pet owner who isn’t wealthy enough to afford all your outrageous fees, when they just want to give their pet this last gift. It really makes me sick to my stomach that it is all about the money.
