Covered bridge
Eight tables were in play Saturday morning at the Bridge Club of Martha’s Vineyard tables in the Tisbury senior center.
High scorers sitting North/South were Deidre Ling and Ed Russell. Ann Brown and Bill Levine were runners-up and Eleanor Hughes and Calvin Bass took third.
At East/West, high scores belonged to Jim Kaplan and Robert Henry, followed by (2) Lee Scott and Helen Colvin and (3) Charity Randolph and Geraldine Jones.
Youth Tennis
On Wednesdays, at Vineyard Youth Tennis adjacent to the blinker off the Vineyard Haven-Edgartown road, some of the top junior tennis players compete for “best on the Island” honors.
Last Wednesday Reid Yennie (VYT) defeated David Steiner (Chilmark) 6-7, 6-2 (10-6).
Justice Yennie (VYT) defeated Patrick McCarthy (Chilmark) 6-4, 4-6, (10-8).
Kent Leonard (VYT) beat Jock Cooperrider (VYT) 6-4, 4-6, (10-4).
Darst King (VYT) defeated Jack Lee (Chilmark) 6-1, 6-2.
The public is welcome to watch, Wednesdays at 5:00 pm.
VYT vs. the world
A USTA junior tennis tournament will be held at Vineyard Youth Tennis this Saturday and Sunday. Local young players 12 and under and 14 and under will compete with similarly aged off-Islanders. VYT Director Scott Smith says Molly deBettencourt is the one to watch in the 12 and under division and Samantha Potter should be favored to win at 14 and under. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Attention high school football players!
The team’s Lift-a-Thon will be held this Sunday, August 15, at 6:00 pm.
Equipment will be issued to seniors and juniors, Monday, August 16 at 6:00 pm. Sophomores and juniors will receive equipment Tuesday, August 17 at 6:00 pm.
Meet the Coaches Night is August 17 at 7:00 pm in the Sanci Pachico Gym.
Equipment make-up day is Monday, August 23 at 6:00.
Official practice begins Monday, August 23 at 5:30 pm.
All players must have a valid Sports Physical to begin practice.
Junior High football players (6th to 8th graders) will receive equipment and paper work on Friday, August 27 at 5 pm at the high school game field. There is a $100 registration fee. Junior High practice begins Monday, August 30.
Over-the-Hill Gang
The Vineyard FC Masters will hold the first of two Sunday pre-season practices for the fall season at Veterans War Memorial Park, Tisbury, this Sunday at 9:00 am. The Masters play in the Over-The-Hill Soccer League’s over 40 division 5 South Division vs. teams from Foxboro, Easton, West Roxbury, and Mansfield. The team is still looking to fill its 30-player roster with skilled players who will turn 40 in 2010 and have had experience playing competitive soccer, are reasonably fit, and can make the commitment to travel every Sunday morning for the 10-week season.
The Vineyard FC Masters finished in second place in the OTHSL Division 6 South last spring. We plan to continue our winning ways starting Sunday, August 29.

Memorial marathon
The Chilmark Community Center ‘s annual basketball marathon for charity goes from noon to 6:00 pm this Sunday, August 15, in memory of former CCC staffer Alex Cohen.
Alex was a summer resident of Chilmark. He was one of the founders of the marathon and worked at the CCC until his untimely death in August of 1991.
Participants will solicit pledges to be distributed among Vineyard charities.
For the first time, a junior marathon will precede the annual marathon from 10:30 am to noon. Youngsters from 6 to 12 years old are welcome to join in all or part of the fun-filled game.

Open Tennis Tourney
The first Mattakesett-Winnetu Open Tennis Tournament is Saturday and Sunday, August 14-15, featuring men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. All players are guaranteed at least two matches per event entered.

Five Ks
The second annual 5K Run for Jabberwocky will be Saturday, August 21, at the Farm Institute, Edgartown. Registration fee is $25 for the 5K, $12 for the half-mile fun run. Register on line at www.campjabberwocky.org. Runners may register and pick up bibs and tee-shirts at Camp Jabberwocky, 200 Greenwood Ave., Vineyard Haven from 9 am to 12:30 pm or at the Farm Institute, Edgartown on race day. The Boston Celtics will match your registration fee.
Sullivan 5K
The annual Dr. Louis Sullivan 5K run/walk for health, benefit of the MV Hospital, is Saturday, August 28, at 9:00 am.
A full Chilmark
A full complement of 1,500 persons have registered to run the annual Chilmark 5K this Saturday, beginning at 10:30 am. The 5K Run for Camp Jabberwocky will be Saturday, August 21, and the Dr. Louis Sullivan 5K, benefit of the MV Hospital, is Saturday, August 28.
