Back to school shopping on Martha’s Vineyard

Can it be that Labor Day is just a little over a week away? Summer was fantastic, but it is already time to get back to reality — especially for families. School is getting ready to start, and perhaps your kids grew like weeds during this summer’s heat wave. Lucky for you, you don’t have to book a boat trip off-Island to get a new school wardrobe for your quickly growing children.

In Oak Bluffs, you have many great options on Circuit Avenue alone. Basics, one of our greatest year-round treasures, has everything from clothes and shoes to outerwear, all at reasonable prices. Their sister store, Eastaway, also has a nice selection of clothes that can take your children through the Indian summer we are all hoping for. B*tru gives your style maven an opportunity to pick a few choice pieces to make their wardrobe special. Third World Trading offers unique clothing options and great costume jewelry to make your girl shine. To ensure that your kids are not only looking good for school, but also have all the tools they need to excel in class, a visit to daRosa’s is a must. There you will be able to get notebooks, pens, pencils, protractors, calculators, and any other school supplies you might need.

Not to be outdone, Edgartown has great school shopping options too. Your sons will love some new jeans and shirts from Sun Dog (on Main Street), along with a new pair of shoes or light jacket. Just up the street at Shirt Tails, you can get great active wear by Gear and Life is Good for the whole family, at great prices. Island Outfitters and The Great Put On both offer current, in-style, options from jeans and sweaters to shoes or outerwear. Trader Fred’s, at the Triangle (and on Main Street in Vineyard Haven) is just plain loaded with everyday wear at rock bottom prices. Across the street, Granite has everything from backpacks to lunch pails along with every-sized notebook and school supplies available.

Vineyard Haven, our year-round mecca, has such clothing cornerstones as Brickman’s and The Green Room. Other fantastic clothing opportunities are Alley Cat, Atlantic Trader, and MV Army/Navy. For your sports lover, Sports Haven can fulfill your fall sports needs. With our Island’s passion for fall football and soccer, I know they will have loads of shoppers.

With some extra time on your hands maybe you will finally take some tennis lessons or start jogging to take off that extra two pounds you gained this summer eating the yummy Morning Glory fruit pies, Mad Martha’s Ice Cream and Sweet E’s decadent cupcakes.

Finish your school-shopping list at Edu Comp. Stocked with your traditional school supplies, you can get everything you need with options to add a little flare. Add in a colorful pen or some great stickers to help decorate notebooks. Whatever your choice, relax and know that our fabulous Island business are here to help make this seasonal transition as easy as possible.
