Chilmark officials broke ground yesterday for three duplex apartment buildings to be built as part of the Middle Line Road affordable housing project.
“It feels like a neighborhood,” selectman Warren Doty said just before the ceremonial ground-breaking.
Mr. Doty said he never doubted the project would reach this point. Over the past six years, plans changed several times, land issues emerged, and six separate town meetings approved various steps or appropriated money.
“We’ve had complete dedication from the town, and town leadership,” Mr. Doty said. “If we started over, there are things we would do differently, but I always thought there would be homes here.”
The builder, Seaver Construction, has one year to finish the three duplex buildings, which will each include two apartment units.
The $3.5 million affordable housing project also includes six lease lots. The lots were awarded by lottery, and homeowners are responsible for their own design and building.
One couple has already moved into a completed house. Two other houses are under construction and a third is about to be started.
