Over 40 soccer: Masters match

The Vineyard FC Masters traveled to West Roxbury Sunday for their final soccer match of the fall season. Fielding only 10 players, the Vineyarders fell behind by a goal early in the contest, but then defender Joaquin Freitas scored an equalizer. It was 1-1 at the half.

In the second period the lead changed twice.

MV goals were scored by Skip Dostal and Chris Buehler. West Roxbury scored three times to claim a 4-3 win and retain its fourth place in the New England Over-the-Hill Soccer League, Division 5 South.

The VFC Masters finish the season in fifth place and will stay in Division 5 for the spring season.

VFC Masters player/manager Neal Sullivan was very pleased with the efforts of his team competing in its third season in the NEOTHSL. Neal encourages experienced, skilled and fit soccer players who will turn 40 in 2011 to consider joining the VFC’s 30-player roster. Interested players available to travel off-Island for 10 Sunday morning matches in the spring may reach Neal at 508-446-1961.
