Edgartown Hardware is moving on up

Those who have driven on the West Tisbury Road into Edgartown between August and now may have seen lots of activity in the old Isuzu lot across from the Edgartown School. The big news is great news to all with the do-it-yourself mantra, as well as local workmen. Edgartown Hardware, a staple on Main Street in Edgartown since its opening in 1946, is getting ready to move to this larger space in January.

While we will most definitely miss its presence on Main Street, this new location will be more accessible and bring some excitement to a great site.

I was able to catch up with owner John Montes, despite his very rigorous work schedule of getting the new space ready for you, to ask him a few questions.

K: John, what prompted you to make this move after being at your current location since its inception?

J: Parking and space are the issues why we are moving. During the busy months there is just no parking.

K: What will Islanders be able to look forward to in your new space?

J: We will vastly expand our product offering, and there will be plenty of parking available. We will have a wonderful Benjamin Moore display that will be about 24 feet and a table and chairs for looking at colors.

K: Will there be any benefits for tradespeople?

J: We will have a conference room available to our interior decorators and contractors free of charge. If they do not have a place to meet with their clients, they can call and schedule the use of our conference room.

K: How is the remodel going?

J: We started our remodel in mid-August and should be finished within the next two weeks. All of our new counters and shelving is due to arrive in December. We will get it all set up and ready for the move in January.

John wanted to also remind everyone that all telephone numbers and mailing will be the same. The only change will be the physical address. The new address is 61 West Tisbury Road.

Until their move in January, you can still shop in the store on Main Street, or visit to ask questions about what new things will be included at the new store. Congratulations.

On another note

Calling all retail owners and managers. I need your help for next week’s column. I know there are many of you out there who offer some great “frequent buyer” programs for our Island community. The challenge is that not everyone knows of them, so if you could email me at shoptalk@mvtimes.com I will help change that. Please include your store’s name along with how your program works and I will share the phenomenal information. The deadline is Sunday night at 6 pm.
