MVC meeting on regional transportation plan

The Martha’s Vineyard Joint Transportation Committee (JTC) will discuss a 2011 regional transportation plan (RTP) for the Island, in a public meeting on December 1.

The RTP is currently being prepared by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission in cooperation with the JTC, which includes representatives of all the Island towns.

The preparation and adoption of the RTP is a prerequisite for Island towns in order to obtain annual federal and state funding for transportation improvement projects, according to MVC executive director Mark London. The plan addresses how to provide a more balanced, safe, and affordable integrated transportation system for the Island.

The RTP addresses transportation issues and objectives, and prioritizes plans for short- and long-term projects within a 20-year span. The current update also will include new sections on climate change and livability, Mr. London said.

The meeting starts at noon at the MVC offices at 33 New York Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call the MVC at 508-693-3453.
