The MVRHS boys varsity basketball team started slowly in their season opener at Pembroke and trailed the Titans 13-2 in the early going. But, paced by Peter Keaney’s game-high 19 points, the Islanders overtook their hosts and earned a convincing 63-49 win.
Both T.J. Van Gerven and Ben Ciciora added an even dozen to the Vineyard’s winning margin.
The Islanders came close to a third period shutout allowing Pembroke just five points in the frame.
Monday, at Wareham, the Vineyarders came in second to the Vikings, 50-36. “We got killed on the offensive glass,” Coach Mike Joyce said.
The boys junior varsity defeated Pembroke off-Island, Saturday, 68-59. Isaac Browne’s 16 points were high. Coach O’Donnell was delighted, “Great all-around effort by everyone.”
The jayvees lost to Wareham, Monday, 50-27. Twenty eight turnovers were costly.
The freshmen boys bested Pembroke away, 68-24, Saturday. Cyrus Breeze led MV scorers with 19.
