Vineyard skaters win Eric MacLean Tourney

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey Peewee and Bantam B teams outdistanced their mainland competition in the 2011 Eric B. MacLean tournament at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena this weekend.

The Island teams were dominant, winning all their games. The Bantams outscored the opposition 24-2, while the Peewees racked up a 23-5 count. Each Island team claimed a championship trophy.

M.V. got superb all-around defense and solid goaltending from bantam Noah Kleinhenz and peewee Wyatt Jenkinson. The two netminders recorded five shutouts between them.

The Bantams took home the title following a 5-0 win Sunday, over the Southern Rhode Island Junior Rams from Kingston.

Andrew Wiley led the Vineyard with two goals and two assists. Alexander Vukota and Emerson Mahoney had a goal and an assist each. Nick Kent scored once, Austin Morley assisted twice, and Matt Davies once.

In the round-robin games, the M.V. Bantams started off with a 6-0 win over the same Junior Rams on Friday night.

Goals were scored by Jack Slayton (2), Andrew Wiley, Emerson Mahoney, Chris Perry, and Austin Morley. Assists went to Greg McCarron (3), Nick Kent (2), Alexander Vukota, Oliver Lane, Matt Davies, and Austin Morley.

Saturday, M.V. defeated Concord/Carlisle 5-2 in the morning and bested Brockton 8-0 in the evening.

Against C.C., Emerson Mahoney led the way with two goals. Jack Slayton and Greg McCarron notched a goal and an assist. Andrew Wiley tallied once. Mike Mazza, Owen Osnoss, Alexander Vukota, and Matt Davies earned assists.

Nick Kent scored a hat-trick against Brockton, while Emerson Mahoney added two goals and an assist. Mac Sashin chalked up a goal and an assist. Jack Slayton and Greg McCarron each scored once. Other assists went to Andrew Wiley (2), Owen Osnoss (1), Oliver Lane (1), and Steven Brown.

The Peewees’ road to the championship also began Friday night, with a 9-0 win over Quincy.

Joe Davies rang up the four-goal Texas hat-trick and added two assists. Aksel Cooperrider was right behind him with three goals and two assists. Tristan Araujo and James Sashin notched a goal and an assist apiece. Kylie Hatt, Jacob Gundersen, Jonas Lukowitz, Josh Forend, and Anthony Jackson all earned assists.

Saturday morning, the Islanders had their toughest test of the weekend against the Southeastern Connecticut Seahawks from Norwich. The final score was 3-2.

Jonas Lukowitz, Joe Davies, and James Sashin all scored. Kylie Hatt, Aksel Cooperrider, Tristan Araujo, and Josh Forend garnered assists.

M.V. refueled for the evening contest and shut out the Providence Bears 5-0. Joe Davies, Jonas Lukowitz, James Sashin, Nick Vukota, and Jacob Gundersen all lit the lamp for the Vineyard. Assists went to Tristan Araujo, Anthony Jackson, Josh Forend, J.J. Mendez, and Jacob Gundersen.

Sunday morning’s final was a rematch between M.V. and SE Conn.

The Seahawks again proved to be tough opponents, but the Vineyard prevailed 6-3.

Joe Davies was the hat-trick hero. Aksel and Nainoa Cooperrider had a goal and an assist each, as did Jacob Gundersen. Jonas Lukowitz, Mason Jeffers, and Tristan Araujo all had assists.
