Several members of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard Makos Swim Club competed in the Southeast Massachusetts Swim League Championship over the weekend. Hosted by the Nantucket Dolphins, the meet drew teams from Marshfield, Sandwich, Eastham, Plymouth, and the Vineyard to Nantucket’s six lane regulation pool with electronic touch-pad timing and full scoreboard.

Every year the SEMSL honors the graduating seniors at the Championship Meet; this year, Makos swimmer Zach Lamie was among the honored swimmers. Zach Lamie also won first place in the 50-yard freestyle competition and second place 100-yard race.

On Saturday, swimmers aged 10 and under competed. Those 11 and over swam on Sunday.

There are currently 22 swimmers between 8 and 18 on the Makos, which are in their first season. Organizers hope that the club will eventually number more than 100. The team is coached by Leslie Craven, Rainy Goodale, and Julian Villegas.

The next swim team session starts April 4. Tryouts will be held from March 21-31, from 4 to 5 pm to determine correct group placement. Call Julian Villegas, director of program operations at 508-696-7171, ext. 120 for information on tryouts.
