Shawna Medeiros of New Bedford and John O’Donnell of Oak Bluffs married on March 19 at the United Methodist Church. Ms. Medeiros is the daughter of Tracy and Patricia Medeiros of New Bedford. Mr. O’Donnell is the son of Bruce and Valerie O’Donnell of Oak Bluffs.
Achievements
Nica Sylvia of West Tisbury, a junior majoring in Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Melbourne, Austrailia, titled Building Sustainable Behaviour: Interactive Displays for Youth Empowerment.
A. Bowdoin “Bow” Van Riper, a professor at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga., and long-time summer resident, is the editor of a recently published book, “Learning from Mickey, Donald and Walt,” a collection of essays about Disney’s edutainment films, which includes two written by Mr. Van Riper.Mr. Van Riper is the son of Janice Van Riper of Vineyard Haven.
Katharine Kavanagh, director of the Rebecca Amos Institute at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, was invited to present at the National Alternative Education Association’s conference in Nashville, Tennessee last month. At What Cost? is an analysis of the struggle inherent in alternative education; how to provide quality education while maintaining the same per-pupil costs as in public schools.
Cullen Reeve Paradise, formerly of Vineyard Haven, won a gold medal in design in the 11-state Northeast region of the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.
