More than 50 Islanders gathered around the “Grandmother Tree” at the Tisbury Meadow preserve on Sunday, March 20, to greet spring and honor the earth with an hour or so of chanting and drumming.
It was the local manifestation of a demonstration called 8,000 Sacred Drums Ceremony, a World Gathering for the Healing of Mother Earth and Peace. The ceremony’s hub was in Temoaya, Mexico, but kindred spirits observed the day and the celebration at sites around the world.
