Elizabeth T. “Betty” Silva a long-time resident of Edgartown, died on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the age of 101.
She was married to Antone M. Silva Jr. who predeceased her in 1992. Betty was born on June 13, 1909, in Westfield and lived briefly in Bridgeport, Conn., before moving to Martha’s Vineyard in 1927.
Betty was the daughter of Joseph T. and Tesy Vargo.
Betty worked as a housekeeper for various residences throughout the Island and some business locations including MV Insurance and the Country Store.
She had a fondness for fishing and bowling and was on the bowling team of the High Hope Girls. She was also a member of the former Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her devoted son, Antone M. Silva III, and his wife, Dianne, of West Tisbury; five grandchildren, Desiree Silva, Lena Saunders, Manuel Nunes, April Mongillo, and Theresa Nunes; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her daughter, Maria Nunes.
