Donald M. Fisher, 82, of West Tisbury, died peacefully on Sunday, April 17, at Mass. General Hospital with family present.

Donald was born May 14, 1928, in Needham, Ma., to Fred S., and Minnie Belle Fisher. The family summered at Lambert’s Cove, and Don and his brother, Fred, chose as young men to make Martha’s Vineyard their permanent home.

On Sept. 10, 1948, Don married Christine “Tina” Fisher of Tisbury. They settled in West Tisbury, where Don built their home on State Road. A long-time employee of New England Telephone, Don eventually retired to pursue his love of gardening, fishing, and shellfishing.

Devoted to his town, Don, in his earlier years served a term as a selectman in West Tisbury. He was a stalwart supporter and member of the Lambert’s Cove Methodist Church and, later, of the Lambert’s Cove Christian Church. He was a loving husband and father as well as a steadfast and loyal friend to all who knew him.

Don is survived by Tina, his wife of 62 years; his son Donald Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Butte, Montana; his son Peter and his wife, Dorothy, of West Tisbury; his daughter Frances and her husband, Jerry Copeland, of the Villages, Fla.; and daughter Martha and her husband, Steve Staples, of Norton.

Also surviving are grandchildren Becky Scott and Don III, step-grandchildren Darcy, David, Debbie, and Ron, and great-grandchild Madeleine.

Don was predeceased by his brother and great friend Fred Fisher Jr.

There will be a graveside service at 1 pm on Saturday, April 23, at the Lambert’s Cove Cemetery in West Tisbury with Rev. George Eli officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may remember Don by sending gifts to Vineyard Nursing Association, Box 399, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
