Leila M. Sequeira

Leila May Whynock Sequeira, born Leila May Whynock on February 27, 1928 in Brocton, died on March 28, 2011, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

She was the child of Charles J. Whynock and Elsie Whitten Whynock of Brockton. She was married to Albert A. Sequeira at the Seamen’s Bethel church in New Bedford. Her nine children survive her: Albert, Robert, James, David, Leila, Laura, Edith, Flora Frost and Marie Neilsen, as well as her 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A devoted friend and neighbor to all she encountered, she accomplished her goal of obtaining her GED in 1981 and followed that with medical training in 1987 to become a Certified Nurse’s Assistant in the years following. Her working years were spent at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a housekeeper. This was followed by managing stores on Martha’s Vineyard and Falmouth. After providing private care for residents of Martha’s Vineyard, she completed her career as a CNA working for Falmouth Nursing Home, working approximately 25 years as a CNA. She also studied two years of LPN.

In her later years, Leila May Whynock Sequeira returned to Martha’s Vineyard and resided at Island Elderly Housing, Aidylberg Apts in 2005. After a stroke in 2010, she was a resident at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she received assistance and care from staff and family members.

Services were held on April 2, 2011 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and her remains are soon to be placed in Melrose Cemetery, 88 North Pearl Street, in Brockton with her mother, Elsie Whitten Whynock.

She will always be loved and is greatly missed!
