Martha’s Vineyard sweeps Spartans in boys’ lacrosse

The Vineyard varsity lacrosse team completed a home and home sweep of Eastern Athletic Conference rival Bishop Stang with an 11-3 victory at Dan McCarthy Field in Oak Bluffs on a chilling, blustery Tuesday afternoon.

The Costello brothers, Chris and Nick, excelled on the attack. Chris fired in two goals and added three assists. Nick, moving from his usual defensive role, earned three assists. Charlie Everett netted three goals and assisted twice. Denver Maciel scored twice.

Goalie Nelson Dickson stopped eight shots and got superb help from his defense.

Last Thursday, the Vineyarders travelled to North Dartmouth and beat the Spartans 7-3. Denver Maciel chalked up his second hat trick of the season to lead Martha’s Vineyard.

The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the halftime break. Charlie Everett scored both Vineyard goals in the first half.

MV got stellar defensive work from Conor Smith and Will Jurcyk. Nelson Dickson was the winning goalie with 13 saves.

The Vineyarders host Wayland, Saturday at 1 pm and Bishop Feehan of Attleboro on Tuesday at 3 pm.
