Hardball on hold
Tuesday, for the second day in a row, the high school baseball team’s game at Chatham was postponed, due to wet grounds, and rescheduled for Thursday. The team now expects to play three games in as many days.
Wednesday, the team played in Taunton at Coyle & Cassidy. Thursday, the game is at Chatham. Friday it’s Bishop Stang here.
Women’s softball
The Women’s Softball League invites ladies of at least 17 years of age to register to play or umpire in the summer league by calling Veronika or Jen at 508-693-8325.
This year the league celebrates its seventh birthday. Play has improved every year and is now at top draw.
Interscholastic ball games
The interscholastic junior high softball (girls) and baseball (boys) seasons are well under way. The Oak Bluffs girls lost their first two games to West Tisbury and Edgartown. Tisbury is also winless after two losses to Edgartown and West Tisbury.
Tisbury and Oak Bluffs played yesterday.
The West Tisbury softball team has won all three of its games and Edgartown is 2-1. Tuesday, West Tisbury played the Charter school.
Three interscholastic baseball games have been played. Tisbury beat Edgartown, 8-2. West Tisbury topped Oak Bluffs, 9-4. West Tisbury also beat Edgartown, but the score was not reported to The Times as of press time.
Next week, interscholastic softball playoffs begin on Monday. Baseball semifinal games start on Tuesday.
Golfers wanted to benefit Boys and Girls
The 17th Annual Children’s Benefit Golf Tournament in support of the MV Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters will be held at Farm Neck on Sunday, June 5. Tennis boosters fundraiser
On Sunday, May 22, the MV Racqueteers Tennis Booster Club will hold a round robin tournament at Vineyard Youth Tennis, a fundraiser for the high school boys’ and girls’ tennis teams. The gentlemen’s draw is from 9 am to noon. Ladies will play from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Register for $35. Find registration forms at vineyardtennis.com. Refreshments will be provided.
Dart results
The dart league met at the Portuguese-American Club on May 5. Here are the results:
Jack Welch, Dana Resendes, and Jeff Wray won the money by beating Michael Lipinsky, Gus Leaf, and Lisa Mathieu, 8-3.
League team standings to date: 1st place, Robert O’Sullivan, Peter Searle, Brenda Welch (51 games won); 2nd — Jack Welch, Dana Resendes, Jeff Wray (48); 3rd — James Rowell, Rene Mathieu, Linda Wood (46).
With only one more week to go, Peter Searle leads the league in the individual standings with 21 tons (points over 100 with three darts). Dana Resendes leads with 6 singles matches won.
Black Dog women’s hockey team finishes second
Vineyarder Sue Mead of Oak Bluffs, tended the goal for the two-time national champion Cape Cod Black Dogs in the 2011 USA Hockey Over 40 Women’s Recreational Adult Non-Check National Championship Tourney held at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex in Ellenton, Fl. from April 28 to May 1.
The Dogs finished 3-1 overall, beating N.O.N. 2-1, Quincy 3-1, and Concord, Pa. 5-2 in the opening round.
The team, sponsored by the Vineyard’s Black Dog Restaurant, came in second this year, bowing to the Tampa-based, but Canadian-laced squad, North of Nowhere 3-2.
