The MV United Under-12 and Under-18 boys travel soccer teams put their best feet forward in their playoff openers against Nantucket.

The Under-12 team found themselves in the unfamiliar position of playing from behind in their South Coast Soccer League division 1 semi-final, played on a soggy pitch at Veterans’ Park in Vineyard Haven, Sunday morning.

Twice, the undefeated Vineyard squad fell behind Nantucket in the first half and twice United battled back to tie the match by the intermission.

The second half was a different story. Martha’s Vineyard tallied four times and sent Nantucket home with a stinging 6-2 defeat.

Jonathan Santana put the ball in the onion bag twice. Nick Andre, Jordan Tate, Ennis Foster, and Aksel Cooperrider each scored once. MVU is 10-0-0 on the season.

Tuesday, the Under-18 squad completed a Vineyard sweep over their Island rivals and did so on Whaler soil, winning 2-1 on a goal in the final minute of play.

The win sends the U-18’s to the SCSL semi-final in North Eastham, Friday against Oceana.

Two other MV United teams qualified for post season play. The Under-14’s host Norton on Saturday at Veterans’ Park. The Under-16’s will square off with Nantucket, Sunday at Veterans’ Park. Match time is 11:15am.
