A tough call

To the Editor:

We can look forward to several more Republican so-called debates, with a large cast of contestants and engaging comic relief provided by such bizarre characters as Michelle Bachman and Ron Paul, but it is reasonably certain that our president in January, 2013 will be one of three men: Obama, Romney, or Perry.

As among these three, there are few if any voters whose order of preference is Perry-Obama-Romney. But there may be many voters whose preference would be Romney-Obama-Perry.

This poses an uncomfortable question: Who should we Democrats hope for as a Republican nominee?

Should we wish for Perry, since this will maximize Obama’s chance of re-election?

Or should we prefer Romney, since this would preserve us from the danger that the White House in 2013 might be taken over by another Texas governor who is far more repellent than the previous Texas governor who the American voters, in their wisdom, elected to the Presidency?

It’s a tough call to make.
