The Vineyard girls and boys varsity basketball teams were perfect over the past week as each squad won two games.
The MV girls travelled to North Eastham Tuesday afternoon and pillaged the Nauset Warriors, 70-43. Maggie Riseborough piled up 23 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks. 18 of her points came in the second half, as MV broke open a five-point game and pulled away. Jenny Lindland scored 11 points, Alex Mark had a strong two-way game, and Maddie Hughes posted seven boards. Alayna Hutchinson also shined on defense.
Monday, the Island boys played Cape Cod Academy at Osterville and dropped the Seahawks, 54-43.
The Islanders led by eight at the half.
Jack Roberts paced the parade to the hoop with 18 points, half of them coming from long distance. Ryan Fisher also had a hot hand accounting of 16.
Erik Wisniowski topped the Academitians with 16 points, including a trio of three pointers.
It was the first loss of the season for the Seahawks (3-1) and the third win without a loss for the Vineyard.
Islanders chew on Sandwich again
The Vineyarders, having gobbled up the Blue Knights at Sandwich on Tuesday, December 13, took second helpings at the Sancy Pachico Gymnasium, last Saturday.
In the girls game, Jenny Lindland and Maggie Riseborough led the purple scorers with 26 and 15 points and collected two buckets of rebounds.
Sandwich is one of those schools that fields a talented and motivated team year after year. This year’s team is no exception to the rule and the Blue Knights led at the half, 32-27, paced by Erin Gendreau’s 16 points.
But there was no stopping the Vineyard’s determination and drive. As in the previous win, MV shut down the Blue Knights in the second half. The Vineyarders outscored Sandwich 16-7 in the third quarter en route to a 67-59 victory.
Having lost their season opener at Sabis International Charter School of Springfield, the girls are 3-1 on the season.
December 13, at Sandwich, the Vineyard boys watched a ten-point lead evaporate and rode an Izak Browne put-back with 2.5 seconds remaining to escape with a 60-59 win.
Saturday, at the Sancy, the Islanders would need no such heroics in a rematch with the Blue Knights. MV jumped off to an early lead and never looked back. At the half, they led Sandwich by a comfortable 42-27 margin and finished ahead, 75-49. Five Vineyarders scored in double numbers: Izak Browne 14, Will Stewart 14, Delmont Araujo 12, Jack Roberts 12, and Peter Keaney 12.
Joe Stanton (18), Zac Sprague (12) and Jason Hendy (12) did almost all the damage for the visitors.
