Islanders compete at Boston University meet

Four members of the M.V. Masters swim team competed in the New England Short Course Meters Swim championships, December 9-11, at the Boston University Fitness and Recreation Center.

Several New England and National records were broken. Some 400 swimmers from all New England states plus New York and New Jersey with a few from Florida, Virginia, Illinois, Arizona and Hawaii competed.

Leslie Craven and Les Cutler swam the 800-meter freestyle. Leslie was second in the women’s 50- to 54-year-old group at 11.07.29. Les was third in the men’s 65- to 69-year-old category in 6:48.72.

Liz Fox was fifth in the 200 meters at 3:16.04, and in the 50-meter freestyle in the 55- to 59-year-old age group. She finished seventh in the 100-meter freestyle.

Rainy Goodale swam with the nation’s top women’s breaststroker, Kelly Legaspi, in the 40- to 44-year-old age class. Rainy pushed Legaspi so hard she had to set a new New England record to win. Rainy was second at 100 meters in 1:20.85 and at 200 meters in 2:55.35. She was also second in the 100-meter individual medley (1:14.91 and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle at 31.61.
