Chef and owner David Spooner plans to open Mon Amour, a French/American restaurant, in mid-April at 395 State Road in Tisbury, at the site of the former Nicky’s Italian Café in the same building complex that houses Radio Shack and Island Entertainment.
“He’s going to combine classic French cooking techniques with favorite dishes from around the world,” said his wife, Sarah, who plans to help out as his bookkeeper. “We’re both really excited.”
Ms. Spooner said she and her husband have been cleaning and painting since they leased the restaurant space starting November 15.
Mr. Spooner is a 1991 graduate of the culinary program at the Rhode Island School of Design. He previously worked as a caterer for Soigne and a sous-chef at L’etoile in Edgartown, and also as a private chef and caterer. For the last 15 years, Mr. Spooner has worked at Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard hauling boats.
Mr. Spooner has already applied for a beer and wine license for the 50-seat restaurant, since the process may take at least six to eight weeks at the state level. The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission allows a restaurant to apply for a license in advance of opening with proof of commitment to a location, such as a copy of a lease, according to Tisbury assistant town administrator Aase Jones.
The Tisbury selectmen have scheduled a public hearing on Mr. Spooner’s application on January 10 at 5:30 pm in town hall.
