Aficionados of opera here on the Vineyard can enjoy the group experience of attending classic opera without leaving the Island.
Capawock Movie Theatre owner Buzzy Hall’s popular Opera at the Capawock, in Vineyard Haven, continues its winter season of Sunday opera screenings this coming Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1 pm, with Giuseppe Verdi’s “A Masked Ball,” based on the story of the assassination of the King of Sweden, Gustav III, in 1792, who was shot while attending a masked ball.
The series continues on the following Sundays at 1 pm.
Sunday, Feb. 12: “Berliner Philharmoniker” Renée Fleming, one of the most acclaimed operatic divas of her generation, performs numerous arias by a broad selection of composers. Recorded in June 2010, backed by the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Sunday, Feb. 26: Verdi’s “La Traviata” Three-act opera about a rather complex love story.
Sunday, March 11: “Carmen” The French opéra comique by Georges Bizet about the beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper.
Sunday, March 25: Verdi’s “Aida” The love story about Aida, an Ethiopian princess, who is captured and brought into slavery in ancient Egypt.
Admission is $15; $12 for seniors and students; $70 for the full series.
