With summer around the corner, Island residents and visitors are concocting their plans for the upcoming months. Whether year-round residents hard at work or seasonal residents here for vacation, summer on the Vineyard can mean weekends sunbathing at the beach, dinners at classic Island restaurants, and events to attend.
But with so much to do, the warm months fly by. To get a glimpse into the ideal Island summer, reporters Ben Williams and Naomi Pallas went to Vineyard Haven to find out, “What’s on your summer bucket list?”
Tessa Permar, West Tisbury, sophomore at Vassar College
“I want to write a play about the Island because I have so many funny stories about having grown up here. I want to learn to cook without almost burning the house down.”
Olivia Cameron, Vineyard Haven, sophomore at Vassar College
“I want to bike every day, and I want to learn how to drive and go on a road trip.”
Eric Johnson, owner of Tisberry Frozen Yogurt, Vineyard Haven
“I want to take my daughters out fishing, do a lot of musical performances on my Tisberry patio, and try to keep a semblance of balance while being pulled in all directions as a business owner and musician.”
Steve and Terri Certilman, Greenwich, Conn., Vineyard Haven summer residents
“We want to go to the Polly Hill Arboretum. We haven’t been there in 10 years. We also love doing the same things over and over again — we want to do more kayaking, and not over-eat.”
Duncan Pickard, former Island resident here for one week this summer
“Get takeout from The Net Result and eat it on Eastville Beach, and jump off the rock at Great Rock Bight.”
