Margaret McBride, of Edgartown, died on Wednesday August 1, 2012, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, with family members by her side. She was 86.

Margaret was born in the town of Tisbury on August 8, 1925. She was the daughter of Emulous and Ruth Elliott. She grew up in Edgartown with a sister, Janice, and a brother, Melviri, both now deceased.

She married her husband of 60 years, Duncan McBride, in 1950 after his discharge from the United States Army a few years earlier, having served in the Italian Theater during World War II.

They spent their entire married life in a cozy house on Simpson’s Lane in Edgartown.

Margaret worked at Conner’s Market on Main Street in Edgartown, where the movie theater is now, and then at the Edgartown National Bank, from where she retired, after 25 years.

Margaret and Duncan loved to travel and would spend the winter months in Florida, enjoying the beaches and Disney World. On the way south they would stop along the way to visit some of Duncan’s Army buddies, and in 1994 traveled to Italy for the 50th reunion of his regiment. While there they met President Clinton and gave him greetings from Martha’s Vineyard.

Margaret was a big sports fan, especially rooting for the Pats and Red Sox, but also the Bruins and Celtics. She was thrilled when all four teams won championships over the last few years.

Margaret was very appreciative of all the people who cared for and about her during the last part of her life. Her friends and neighbors, people at the Senior Center, doctors and nurses at the Hospital, and especially the Hospice and V.N.A. nurses and home health care aides. She marveled at the help and support she received.

Margaret didn’t have children of her own, but she is survived by many nieces and nephews, both great and great-great, including Carol Ellis of New Vineyard, Maine, and Wayne Royal of Edgartown. She was predeceased by her husband in 2010.

Donations may be made in her memory to Vineyard Nursing Association, PO Box 399, or to Island Hospice, PO Box 4188, both in Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Margaret was buried on August 4 in the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown.
