Recommendations from Kristin Maloney, children’s librarian at Chilmark Library
“Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea” by Jan Peck – This picture book is a wonderful read-aloud with a surprise ending. The rhythmic and repetitive lines lend themselves to singing this story with a call and response component. Meeting different creatures of the sea makes it a perfect book to read on an island.
“The Voyage of Turtle Rex” by Kurt Cyrus – This picture book follows the life of a giant prehistoric sea turtle. It is fiction but contains many true facts about the prehistoric world. It is a beautifully written story that is informative but not too complicated.
“Tua and the Elephant” by R.P. Harris – This chapter book is perfect for animal lovers and readers who are ready for chapter books. In Chiang Mai, Thailand, nine year old Tua releases a young elephant from its chains. She must rescue the elephant and get her to a refuge without getting caught herself.
